Karen Paz Dominguez has information about her qualification on her website. More information is also transcribed below:
My name is Karen Paz Domínguez and I am running for Auditor-Controller for Humboldt County in 2018. I have been an accountant/auditor for over 5 years and I'm currently serving as the Assistant Auditor-Controller for Humboldt County.
I'm running on a platform that promotes integrity and ethics in the office of the Auditor-Controller, accountability to the residents of Humboldt County, and transparency in decision-making and process.
I graduated from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. While a student at HSU, I received a music performance scholarship from the School of Music, played bassoon for the Humboldt Symphony and trombone for the Jazz Orchestra before making the decision to switch majors to accounting. It was with my parents' unwavering support and encouragement that I was able to achieve that.
After graduating, I pursued a career in accounting and auditing and worked at two local CPA firms serving Humboldt residents and organizations. I regularly participate in accounting-related events to network with other accounting professionals. A room full of accountants? Count me in!
My passion for accounting pales in comparison to my passion for public service. I believe it is up to all of us to create the change we wish to see in the world. I serve by volunteering my time to community efforts directed at improving people's quality of life. Some of the organizations I have volunteered with throughout my 12 years of living in Humboldt County include: North Bay Rotaract, Lost Coast Rotaract, Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise, Rotary Club of Arcata Noon, LatinoNet, Emma Center, CASA of Humboldt, Humboldt Comunidad, True North, Bayside Grange, and because laughter and fun are crucial to our well-being, Savage Henry Comedy Festival and Make Me Laugh Productions.
A career in accounting and auditing means that I will be a student for the rest of my life. There are new guidelines and regulations every year that I must adhere to. In order to do that, I take very seriously the need to complete Continuing Education requirements to stay up-to-date on all new and updated accounting practices.
I would be remiss if I did not mention my family as they have been and continue to be the source of my inspiration. My husband is the coordinator for the Latinx Center for Academic Excellence at Humboldt State University and my children are learning how to be kind and contributing members of society. It is with their full support that I am running for Auditor-Controller.
I thank you for taking the time to learn about me and I hope that you will vote for me on June 5th, 2018 to be your next Humboldt County Auditor-Controller.
