In early July, news broke that Novo Dia, a company which provides software that processes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program transactions at more than 1,400 farmers markets nationwide, will end its services this season. Recently, a nonprofit provided a temporary fix which will allow the company to remain open through August; however, with Novo Dia closing, a number of markets in the area are searching for solutions. Trudy Toliver, executive director of the Portland Farmers Market and the Farmers Market Fund, joins us to talk about what’s happening.
On the first of this month, a Seattle ban on plastic straws and utensils in the food service business went into effect. Soon after, Starbucks announced they too would be phasing out the use of plastic straws company-wide. Yet, with all the excitement surrounding these new environmentally conscious bans, business and cities are leaving out a large consumer population: people with disabilities. Emily Cooper from Disability Rights Oregon and Brook McCall from United Spinal Association join us to talk about how this ban impacts the lives of people with limited mobility.
