State Poet Laureate Expounds On Arts in Education, Poetry's Power

  California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia is this week's guest on Artwaves. Gioia is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning poet. 

  He was Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts 2003-2009, and during that time launched several nationwide programs expanding public support of the arts and arts education including the national recitation contest for students Poetry Out Loud.  
 

 Gioia will be on the North Coast for two public poetry reading/conversation events beginning Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 3230 Harrison Ave., Eureka. At this event he will be joined by James McCubbrey of Eureka High School. McCubbrey was Poetry Out Loud Champion for Humboldt County. Gioia will also be at the Del Norte County Library, 190 Price Mall, Crescent City, on Tuesday, July 19th at 7 p.m.
